Seasonal Tree Care Calendar

What your trees need, when they need it, tailored for the CSRA climate.

Spring (Mar-May)

 • Inspect for winter damage: broken branches, frost cracks, salt damage
 • Fertilize before growth flush and soil test first, slow-release preferred
 • Monitor for early pests: aphids, scale, tent caterpillars
 • Mulch 2-4" (not against trunk) to retain moisture, suppress weeds
 • Schedule structural pruning for young trees before full leaf-out

Summer (Jun-Aug)

 • Water deeply 1-2x/week during drought with 10 gal per inch of trunk diameter
 • Watch for heat stress: scorched leaves, early drop, wilting
 • Light pruning only, remove dead/hazardous limbs only
 • Inspect for storm damage after thunderstorms
 • Mulch refresh to conserve soil moisture in heat

Fall (Sep-Nov)

 • Best time for major pruning (dormant season approaching)
 • Plant new trees root establishment before winter
 • Deep water before freeze for evergreens and new plantings
 • Rake leaves from base to prevent fungal issues
 • Schedule hazard assessment before winter storms

Winter (Dec-Feb)

 • Excellent time for removals & major pruning when the ground is frozen, less cleanup
 • Inspect for structural defects visible without leaves
 • Protect young trees from deer/rabbit damage with guards
 • Avoid salt near trees, use sand/kitty litter for traction
 • Emergency: call 24/7 for storm damage, we respond in all weather

Watering Guide for CSRA Trees

Proper watering is the #1 factor in tree survival. Our climate demands attention.

Tree AgeFrequencyAmountKey Notes
Newly Planted (0-2 yrs)2-3x/week10-15 gal per wateringCritical establishment period
Establishing (2-5 yrs)1-2x/week15-20 gal per wateringDeep watering encourages deep roots
Mature (5+ yrs)As neededDeep soak monthly in droughtSpecies-dependent; oaks need less

Pro Tips

 • • Water at drip line (canopy edge), not at trunk
 • • Slow soak: use soaker hose or drip irrigation 2-4 hours
 • • Check soil: 6-8" deep should be moist, not soggy
 • • Morning watering reduces evaporation
 • • New trees: water even if raining, rain often insufficient

Mulching Done Right

The single best thing you can do for tree health — if done correctly.

Depth: 2-4 inches maximum, deeper causes root rot

Radius: Extend to drip line (edge of canopy) or beyond

Gap: Keep 3-6 inches clear from trunk, no volcano mulching!

Material: Organic (wood chips, pine straw, shredded leaves), not rubber/rock

Refresh: Annually in spring; remove old if >4 inches deep

Common Mistakes to Avoid

 • ✗ Volcano mulching (piled against trunk) causes rot, girdling roots, rodent damage
 • ✗ Too deep (>4") suffocates roots, promotes disease
 • ✗ Rubber/rock mulch no soil improvement, heat damage, hard to maintain
 • ✗ Fresh wood chips on young trees, nitrogen tie-up
 • ✗ Mulch touching trunk, ALWAYS maintain 3-6" gap

Warning Signs: When to Call an Arborist

Early detection saves trees, money, and prevents emergencies.

Sudden leaning or soil heaving at base

IMMEDIATE Call 24/7

Large dead branches over structures/targets

HIGH Schedule ASAP

Cracks/splits in trunk or major limbs

HIGH Assessment needed

Fungal conks (mushrooms) on trunk/roots

HIGH Decay likely

Sparse canopy, early leaf drop, dieback

MODERATE Schedule evaluation

Sawdust/frass at base — borer activity

MODERATE Treatment may help
